Update on Dec 5, 2024 crashed the app on my iPhone. Tried EVERYTHING to get it going. Apple support said to delete and re add app. I said I didn’t want to take a chance on losing TONS of files. They said I had cloud backup turned on so all files would restore. THEY DID NOT RESTORE. Lost tons of movies for four different clients. I am so screwed. This app does NOT backup to iCloud as they claim. Instead of fixing that, they screwed with something else and caused it to crash. Stay away from this toy app.

Tried every single solution provided online. Shuts down every time you try to share a file on a newer macbook. Waste of time making a project. 3rd party was much better.

I make around 100 videos a year, and iMovie used to be great. Now, at least once a month, iMovie will pick one of my videos at random and refuse to export it! Just for kicks and giggles! It’ll go about halfway and then stop, the progress bar will just be stuck and my video will be trapped in iMovie unless I screen record it playing in iMovie. Which, you know, DEFEATS THE ENTIRE PURPOSE OF IMOVIE. And Apple support can’t fix the problem, I’ve reached out to them MULTIPLE times and each time I spend over an hour talking to different people only for them to end up completely stumped. And no amount of submitting feedback, requesting help, etc. does anything. They’ve absolutely destroyed this app and I will not be using it anymore. If y’all want to retain your customer base maybe you ought to try and fix this glaring issue. I can’t believe y’all are just chill with that and thinking it’s an okay bug to have.

It is a ok program if you want to call it free. Seriously behind times not even offering portrait resolutions for shorts and reels. I am not sure about others but editing was the only reason I purchased an over 3k MacBook Pro. I do use DaVinci and FCP for projects but I assumed iMovie would do the shorts/reels and being an app on all apple devices I thought that was the way to go yet I am back to adobe RU for just that purpose. Please apple update this app to support more resolutions.

It’s a great free video maker, but limiting resolution to 1080p and video to 16x9 is really unnecessary, just to get people to buy the pro app.

This app is great for any beginner wanting to gain experience in the editing program. In order to enjoy this app you must study the tools and how to properly save all your projects. Give it a try, it’ll be worth it.
  • I actually like it

iMovie clearly has its faults, but as a beginner, I actually really like it because it’s easy to use and well integrated with the Apple ecosystem. I’ve used to make multiple short youtube videos, some presentations for classes, and some other movies just for fun, and I find the whole thing very usable and understandable. I do wish it had things like more music options, better text boxes, different kinds of fading, etc, so I would definitely want something more if I was using it every day. Still, I think it works perfectly for my use case and I’m very satisfied!
