Description

Learning a language can be an experience that transforms your life. Over 25 years of language learning experience has taught Rosetta Stone one thing: everyone has the ability to learn to read, write, and speak a language with confidence. Try the Rosetta Stone app yourself for free. Many online language learning apps will promise that you can learn a language in just a few minutes a day. However, there is a significant difference between memorizing vocabulary lists and speaking a language with confidence. Learning a language is about more than just the words. One of the mistakes new language learners make is treating language as an object or an end goal instead of as an experience. Ditch the books, translator, and dictionary, and surround yourself with a language whenever, wherever with the Rosetta Stone mobile app. What are people saying about Rosetta Stone: • CNN Underscored - "There’s a good reason why the language learning app Rosetta Stone is the gros chien (that is, the big dog) of the apps we tested" • Mashable - "one of the OG language-learning services, known for its deep dive into accent pronunciation" • Popular Science - "super-smooth and intuitive, and the lessons neither feel too short so as to be forgettable nor too long so as to be a chore" • PC Mag - "reliable, accurate, and thorough" Rosetta Stone has taught millions of people new languages, and you’re next. From day one, you’ll: • Stay focused with a personalized language learning plan based on your motivation. • Learn a language intuitively using our proven immersion method. • Perfect your pronunciation with instantaneous feedback. • Download lessons to do everything offline. • Access different kinds of exercises with our Extended Learning features. • Sync progress across all your devices. • And never see an ad, ever. My parents got Rosetta Stone for my sister and I when we lived in California in high school and we learned Spanish and we still know the phrases from that program today. Fast forward to today I’m learning Turkish to be able to better communicate with my future husband and it’s a lot of fun. Given the reason I’m doing it and also the way the program is set up it’s challenging and engaging and a little mysterious, and I think that combination of things really makes a great way to learn a new language.
  • Custom learning plans gone

It appears that Rosetta Stone removed the custom learning plans from the app and is only available on the web.
  • Not A Very Good App-Not Accessible

This app exclusively uses landscape orientation of your screen. Some users like my myself struggle with holding ou phones in that orientation due to hand use limitations. But I guess what do you expect from a company stuck in the 90s that doesn’t care about its user base with disabilities.

Among all language learning apps, Rosetta Stone takes a unique approach — one which I find to be very useful and valuable. It provides visual associations with words and sentences, and it teaches grammar through practice rather than through dry paragraphs of text. I’m not sure I would use this app as my sole source for learning, but it is an excellent supplement to other resources, and it is definitely moving me forward in my language learning journey. I can say without hesitation that Rosetta Stone earns a place in the top tier of all language learning apps. And it’s vastly superior to Duolingo — on multiple counts. My main criticism is in regard to the listening and speaking exercises of this app. As the user moves deeper in the curriculum, Rosetta Stone will sometimes decline to provide text or audio for an image, requiring the user then to infer what should be said based on the context. And this is not a guessing game. Other times, Rosetta Stone will provide audio but no text, and the user must then remember what was said in order to repeat it, and where the spoken sentence is very long, the user may not remember all the words. And this is not a memory game either. For example, in one Spanish exercise, Rosetta Stone flashed this on screen for a moment: “Estoy buscando una foto de una cascada para mi esposa. ¿Tiene idea de dónde puedo buscar?” Then no sooner than this text had appeared, it was gone, and the user was supposed to have repeated it word for word (from memory). I understand the need to memorize vocabulary. But I already know the vocabulary of this quoted text. I know also its verb conjugations and other grammar. But I couldn’t memorize the two sentences on the spot. People who want to play memory games will not go to the education section of the App Store. How well the user infers what should be said, or how well the user remembers what was spoken, in no way measures (or improves) listening and speaking skills. All the same, aside from my criticism above, Rosetta Stone is definitely worth the subscription fee, and I strongly recommend it. I use it daily.
  • Great value for a lifetime membership

This is a really great program, especially for those looking to learn different languages. I was able to get a lifetime membership for about $200 and I’ve been using it on and off for several years. Is far better than something like Duolingo, which charges only monthly or annual memberships.
  • A frustrating way to learn

I don’t think there is a perfect app that works for everyone to learn a second language. I think a common experience is for folks to find benefit from trying a few different ways to learn. I’ve been happy with a combination of Duolingo and Pimsleur, and have a solid base of Spanish already, so I thought that throwing in some Rosetta Stone would complement that learning. Instead, I’ve given up on this app. Not because the language is too hard but because the app doesn’t explain what to do. You just have to “figure it out”, and a lot of that is matching up sentences to tiny pictures that are very hard to see on a smart phone. It really slows things down and while I get that “immersion” is effective in some ways, it isn’t effective when you’re just guessing what it is you’re supposed to do for a given exercise. I tried for a few weeks before leaving this review but it’s time for me to move on to better tools.
  • Great language learning method

Great for language learning. I like the rosetta stone method! The app is sometimes finicky though. It’s not always the best with speech recognition and will say your pronunciation was wrong or that it couldn’t hear you. It might also freeze up a bit when going into landscape mode.
