Description

Learning a language can be an experience that transforms your life. Over 25 years of language learning experience has taught Rosetta Stone one thing: everyone has the ability to learn to read, write, and speak a language with confidence. Try the Rosetta Stone app yourself for free. Many online language learning apps will promise that you can learn a language in just a few minutes a day. However, there is a significant difference between memorizing vocabulary lists and speaking a language with confidence. Learning a language is about more than just the words. One of the mistakes new language learners make is treating language as an object or an end goal instead of as an experience. Ditch the books, translator, and dictionary, and surround yourself with a language whenever, wherever with the Rosetta Stone mobile app. What are people saying about Rosetta Stone: • CNN Underscored - "There’s a good reason why the language learning app Rosetta Stone is the gros chien (that is, the big dog) of the apps we tested" • Mashable - "one of the OG language-learning services, known for its deep dive into accent pronunciation" • Popular Science - "super-smooth and intuitive, and the lessons neither feel too short so as to be forgettable nor too long so as to be a chore" • PC Mag - "reliable, accurate, and thorough" Rosetta Stone has taught millions of people new languages, and you’re next. From day one, you’ll: • Stay focused with a personalized language learning plan based on your motivation. • Learn a language intuitively using our proven immersion method. • Perfect your pronunciation with instantaneous feedback. • Download lessons to do everything offline. • Access different kinds of exercises with our Extended Learning features. • Sync progress across all your devices. • And never see an ad, ever. For the first time, we’re offering every one of our languages under one subscription. Flip between languages as often as you’d like and enjoy the freedom to get seriously curious. • Finally Learning, Not Just Clicking – But Needs Stability Fixes

After a 1200+ day streak on Duolingo, I realized I was maintaining a habit more than I was building a skill. The app pushed me to preserve the streak, pay for one annual subscription, and then upgrade to another. It felt like I was being gamified instead of actually learning. Rosetta Stone, by contrast, feels like it was designed to help me communicate. The lessons are immersive and intuitive—there’s a real sense of progress, not just dopamine hits. I’m finally absorbing the language, not just tapping my way through it. That said, the interface could use some stability improvement. The app occasionally freezes when I tap the translate feature, forcing me to swipe up and reload it from the app carousel to move forward. Sometimes it won’t let me progress to the next screen at all while I furiously swipe. There is a more significant time commitment to the app’s lessons, so these bugs are frustrating. If you can fix those bugs, you’ve got the best language learning tool out there—substance over streaks.

I wish there was a visual breakdown for the vocabulary, verbally doing it helps.

Update again: I was indeed too optimistic. While it does help significantly to wait one second, there are still words the app just cannot hear/understand. Ironically, I once yelled profanity into it after nothing registered 20 times in a row, and what do you know, it accepted the profanity. It’s mind boggling how bad this is. Especially with all the advancements in AI and speech recognition, RS is living in the Stone Age, no pun intended. Update: Holy smokes, there’s no way the answer to everyone’s complaint has been something so simple! For whatever reason, when the app prompts you to speak, THE MIC ISNT ACTUALLY ON for the first second or so. I only noticed because the iPhone 15 has a little orange dot when the mic is being used and I noticed there was a delay between the “ding” prompting you to speak and the mic being active. So for most people who start speaking when the app prompts you, try waiting a second before saying anything. It should go a lot more smoothly. I will leave my rating at 1 star until Rosetta Stone fixes this because it has plagued users for YEARS. So there you go Rosetta Stone, I just did what your engineers couldn’t for god knows how long and you didn’t even have to pay me. Original: There’s no way this app should have 4.8 stars. Their speech recognition is beyond pointless. I have a brand new iPhone and it says my mic is providing poor quality. It’s been this way for years across both iPhone and android. I honestly don’t know why I keep coming back to see if it’s been fixed. I must be insane.

Update: I would love to see more content added to the Spanish curriculum. —————- Among all language learning apps, Rosetta Stone takes a unique approach — one which I find to be very useful and valuable. It provides visual associations with words and sentences, and it teaches grammar through usage and practice rather than through dry paragraphs of explanatory text. I’m not sure I would use this app as my sole source for learning, but it is an excellent supplement to other resources, and it is definitely moving me forward in my language learning journey. Also, while no speech recognition is perfect, and while I notice that a number of people are critical of the speech recognition in Rosetta Stone, I actually find it to be among the best in the industry. I can say without hesitation that Rosetta Stone earns a place in the top tier of all language learning apps. And it’s vastly superior to Duolingo — on multiple counts. My main criticism is threefold. First, when using a large iPad in landscape mode, as the sample sentences get longer (at least for Spanish), the text is often truncated. Sometimes the font size is reduced so that all the text can been seen, but not always. And this happens VERY often. So some QA (quality assurance) testing is in order. Second, there is a problem in regard to the listening and speaking exercises of this app. As the user moves deeper in the curriculum, Rosetta Stone will sometimes decline to provide text or audio for an image, requiring the user then to infer what should be said based on the context. And this is not supposed to be a guessing game. Other times, Rosetta Stone will provide audio but no text, and the user must then remember what was said in order to repeat it, and where the spoken sentence is very long, the user may not remember all the words. And this is not a memory game either. For example, in one Spanish exercise, Rosetta Stone flashed this on screen for a moment: “Estoy buscando una foto de una cascada para mi esposa. ¿Tiene idea de dónde puedo buscar?” Then no sooner than this text had appeared, it was gone, and the user was supposed to have repeated it word for word (from memory). I understand the need to memorize vocabulary. But I already know the vocabulary of this quoted text. I know also its verb conjugations and other grammar. But I couldn’t memorize the two sentences on the spot. So as a result, Rosetta Stone marks it as an error. People who want to play memory games will not go to the education section of the App Store. How well the user infers what should be said, or how well the user remembers what is spoken, in no way measures (or improves) listening and speaking skills. All the same, aside from my criticism above, Rosetta Stone is definitely worth the subscription fee, and I strongly recommend it. I have no regrets in making a lifetime purchase of this app. And I use it daily. I highly recommend it.
  • Lacks Explanations

It was fun to go through but there is no explanation of grammer or anything else. It would be much easier to learn if that was given. Many times I know the answer but have no clue what they are saying. I have free little apps from apple that do a better job. Do not understand why there is so little training for letters and written hebrew

Don’t know what’s so hard to fix about periodic crashing, lessons that forget progress, and voice recognition that has no terminate option, ie if you pronounce a sentence the mic will continue to pick up background noise in perpetuity, after a few minutes has gone by you will be charged incorrect for properly voicing the phrase. A finished speaking button as found on other voice recognition apps is all it would take. This company is lazy and doesn’t deserve your business

I was on unit three of Duolingo for German and I still don’t understand how to make something plural and I did a single lesson of this and now I know what to do to make something plural. This is far better than Duolingo and they don’t have AI first
