  • Not great, charged me extra

App wasn't really better than Google Voice or similar competitor. Biggest flaw was not being able to use the number to authenticate. After I canceled the subscription on Apple, they still charged me an extra month for the text surcharge. Christian, one of the service reps, was not helpful in resolving this.
  • Lacking and dated

This is not a great app. I’ve used it for a couple of years and it is clunky and dated. It is slow and has awkward functionality. For instance, you can be looking at a text thread and another text notification will come in for that thread yet the text won’t actually appear in the thread until you leave the thread and come back to it, and even then it might take a few seconds for it to show up. I appreciate that they don’t collect data and the pricing is low, but I’m actually looking to switch platforms because I’m tired of dealing with this app and its shortcomings.

I’m sick of this app. Can’t respond to texts, sometimes, then it won’t answer calls. I’m over it.
  • Dated and web interface trouble

After using this for a few days I wish I could cancel and get a refund, but they have a no refund policy. I got a year subscription because I was hoping to use it for my practice, and I guess I’m stuck with this for now. Been hard to find a HIPAA compliant service, but it looks like ZOOM Phone is a good future option. Hindsight 20/20 The web interface is erroring out in the texting section, and the support gave the equivalent of “try turning it off and on again” (sign out and sign back in). Still broken. Phone app generally works, but feels dated/clunky. I think they’re resting on their money-making laurels.

Let’s be honest: this app is terrible, but we all tolerate it because it’s cheap. The service is cheap. Real cheap. But the app: the UI & design are terrible in many ways—for example, ‘business’ contacts by default even though I never use them; incoming calls sometimes (often actually?) fail to connect and are just silent, and also do not show caller ID even when contacts exist (and the calls later show up with names in call history); outgoing calls often hang up immediately; dial keypad always defaults to the wrong country code even though I *never* dial to that country… various weird things that are actually rather easy to fix. It also doesn’t use bluetooth headphones when it should and when the rest of iOS does. It’s just bad. Want more? There are some circumstances in which pressing the phone lock button hangs up your call. Why would it ever do that? There are a ton of “low-hanging fruit” things to fix that would make the app substantially better, but it’s been the same for years. I have used this service for years, and the app hasn’t improved even a little. But the price is good. So, that’s what you’ll be getting into here. Honestly I wonder if iPlum was created by a higher priced competitor as an inferior option for people who want to pay less (“price discrimination”). I can think of no other reason a company would maintain such a terrible product for so long. But that’s just my speculation. I may be very wrong.

Is there zero stars? Very disappointed with this app and company. The app is very hard to navigate compared to their competitors. You will need to pay to use their text feature. There’s also no group text option. To answer a call, you need to tap between 1-9 in addition to accepting the call. The incoming call doesn’t show the number and shows your number instead. There’s no chat or phone support. The email support is like talking to a one-way robot with default responses. They will make you pay to port out a number that was ported to them at no cost.
  • Customer service

Attempted to reach out to customer service, they do not have a direct line and everything has to be done via email. It took several days for them to respond, as I was trying to port the number out. I got the same results and was still unable to port after I paid money to port the number. Asked for manager and was unable to get an email of one. Highly frustrated as initially the service was great until things stopped working.

I can’t reply to group messages of 11 or more and that’s important with the work I do. The numbers that are saved in my phone do not show as names on the texts. I also can’t answer any of my calls. They hardly ever connect so I end up calling everyone back. It’s super annoying!

  • TEXT MESSAGE PROBLEMS GALORE

I cannot recommend this platform. There’s some great features on this app and it has so much potential. Unfortunately for a hospital provider that uses text message as primary communication, it’s a major issue that 1 out of 10 text messages do not go through and do not get delivered. There is also issues with outgoing texts marked as spam, even with paying the validation fee of $2.99/month. I eventually became so frustrated I ended up just adding a second line on my iPhone through Verizon. Even though the number is ported to a different service provider, some texts are still getting sent to iPlum instead of my iMessage. And messages I send from iMessage do not get delivered to these numbers, have to send through the iPlum app. I may have to change my number and start fresh which is going to be a major hassle. Save yourself the headache and stay away if you need the ability to communicate via text message!
