    The developer has given up on Overcast again. Issues continue to stack up. Where is the faster development of the app the rewrite was supposed to solve? Fundamental features of the app do not work. Podcasts frequently don’t download. The base app was great at one time but those days are over. When you try to use any of the additional features, they’re now completely broken. My podcast list keeps changing the order I set, and the High-Priority Podcasts feature does not work. Full stop. UX glitches are an expectation now. Priority Playlists worked before the big rewrite. Episodes often stop playing halfway through, or worse, the app plays a totally different episode than what’s displayed. The post-rewrite version feels much buggier and requires way more fiddling than ever before. I’ll plan ahead and spend a few moments working around the Priority Playlist issues by manually reordering my queue only to discover when I’m out walking that Overcast has reverted my set order. It is incredibly frustrating. Also, be prepared for very frequent “DOWNLOAD FAILED” errors. You need to manually go into the app and tap the podcast to get it to download again. The app requires nonstop fiddling to make it work. The UX really needs some serious rethinking. The old version wasn’t perfect, but at least it was usable. Now it feels clunky and hard to navigate, especially if you’re out walking or multitasking. I find I have to stop what I’m doing to really contemplate where some of the button or features are hidden. Base navigation is confusing. On top of that, support requests go unanswered, and the developer has openly said they don’t prioritize responding to them. If I were just starting out with podcast apps, I wouldn’t pick Overcast knowing what I know now. Since I listen to dozens of hours of podcasts a week, I’d likely begin with another app that offers a smoother and more reliable experience. Honestly, I’m considering switching to another podcast app entirely.

  • The Streaming Rewrite Killed UX

    Once Marco refactored the streaming. The UX went off a cliff. This app used to be bulletproof. Now it’s fragile and is purely a money grab.

    I’ve used Overcast for years, but recent updates have made it extremely buggy, less intuitive, and frankly unusable. Unfortunately will be moving back to the Apple Podcasts app (something I never thought possible!)

  • Has been bad since iOS 18 released

    It was bad when iOS 18 first released, and they e never really fixed it. If you have a queue it will often delete podcasts midway through listening. It often skips randomly around podcasts while listening. And it often won’t move on from one podcast to another without fully closing the app out to restart multiple times. I have tried and tried to believe they’d fix it. But it’s time to move to a reliable platform even though I’ve paid for this one.

    Update: subscription canceled. If the developer doesn’t care neither do I. I am actually considering moving to Apple Podcasts. Sync is messed up related to playlists. Get the queue updated on one device, then the other devices sync and playlists are empty. Go back to the original device and they’re gone from there too. Podcast info button works until it doesn’t and requires a kill/restart. Then I get the info popup as many times as I tried clicking it before. Random downloads fail and sometimes a kill/restart resolves it, other times not. Never updates/downloads on its own. Random UI glitches. App developer appears to not care. The only thing I’ll miss if I move is voice boost, per app speeds, and no syncing now playing queue. But at least Apple updates on it’s own.
