  • Best Japanese Dictionary App Out There

For me, Yomiwa is the best one. I got it when I was studying Japanese in high school and still have it after college. I’ve been studying for about a decade now which is crazy to me and I would consider myself more or less fluent at this point. Yomiwa has all your basic features including recognition of English, Romaji, Kana, and Kanji for any given word. It also has kanji and kana character recognition via picture or writing it yourself. Finally, it allows you to make word lists of your own and already has pre-created word lists by category (physics terms, cultural expressions, onomatopoeia, JLPT kanji lists, and many more). It also organizes kanji characters by frequency in usage, JLPT level, and some other things. I use this app almost every day and it has all the features I could ask for along with example sentences with pretty decent context and translations. I’ve only recently supplemented with the app “Reverso” since that gives a lot better contextual examples of words.

My favorite Japanese dictionary on iOS. Love the bundled ocr and the browser. The flashcards are convenient- pretty easy to export. Only possible improvement would be direct anki flashcard generation, but I understand it’s an unrealistic ask. Definitely a keeper. Update: lately it’s been crashing a lot. Have to make sure to delete my lookup history constantly

I was having a crash issue with the app and reached out via the contact form. It was totally fixed the very nice day. This is a nice, user-friendly Japanese-English dictionary with several modes. One can search by radical, pronunciation, or finger-drawing.

I use Yomiwa to learn vocabulary from Japanese YouTube videos and articles from Japanese websites. The only downside for this app is that it froze often.

Usually you try out different apps to see which one you like for the purpose you need. With Yomiwa, there’s no need to try out any other app. It’s got things I didn’t even know I needed but come in major handy as a returning language learner. Yomiwa does things the overpriced denshi jisho of my day could never! I purchased the pro version but I’d happily continue to donate for all the good and variety of learning tools this app has brought me.The only problem I’ve had is with the translator screen either not word-wrapping text or being unreadable when my phones dark mode is on. Sometimes it’ll correct itself, sometimes it doesn’t and it’s a struggle, but that’s the most annoying thing I’ve encountered. Thanks for a great product!

The app is a waste of money and doesn’t give you an accurate translation from pictures. I travelled to Japan and used the camera translation option and it was USELESS! It could only tell me the individual meanings and not the full, overall translation. I tried to use this app for translating menu items in Japan and it would only give me the basic meanings like “water” or “cold”, not even telling me if menu item i was translating was beef or chicken or etc. IT WOULDNT EVEN TELL ME THE TYPE OF FOOD, IT WOULD JUST SAY A BASIC MEANING LIKE “hot”. Complete waste of time.
