Description

Whisper Notes: Highly accurate offline speech-to-text using the advanced Whisper AI model, running completely on your device for total privacy. Perfect for capturing those brilliant ideas during your daily walk, or use it as your go-to voice memo app. You can also import audio files to transcribe lengthy meetings or lectures—though it might run a bit slower since everything processes locally on your device. The accuracy blows away your phone's built-in speech recognition. No subscriptions, no in-app purchases, no ads—just a simple one-time payment for lifetime access. ■ Features - Local voice recording & transcription - Import and transcribe audio/video files, all offline - Batch export or delete text and audio files - Supports export of timestamped transcript ■ Why we made this Sometimes I have a bizarre dream and want to record it when I wake up, but typing with sleepy eyes is tough. I needed a tool that could quickly capture and transcribe speech. When friends send messages that need long replies while I'm out walking or eating, I want to respond quickly without sending voice messages. ■ FAQ 1. Does it support real-time transcription during recording? Not currently, it can only record and then transcribe when finished. 2. Is there a maximum transcription length? No, in theory you can record several hours of audio. However, since the transcription happens on your device, it will take some time. I've tested it with about 1 hour of audio and the transcription was accurate. 3. What is the transcription speed? It depends on your device. On my iPhone 15, the transcription speed is about 1:5, which means 5 minutes of audio takes about 1 minute to transcribe. 4. What languages are supported? English, 中文, Deutsch, Español, Русский, 한국어, Français, 日本語, Português, Türkçe, Polski, Català, Nederlands, Arabic, Svenska, Italiano, Bahasa Indonesia, Hindi, Suomi, Tiếng Việt, Hebrew, Українська, Greek, Bahasa Melayu, Čeština, Română, Dansk, Magyar, Tamil, Norsk, Thai, Urdu, Hrvatski, Bulgarian, Lietuvių, Latina, Māori, Malayalam, Cymraeg, Slovenčina, Telugu, Persian, Latviešu, Bengali, Српски, Azərbaycan, Slovenščina, Kannada, Eesti, Macedonian, Brezhoneg, Euskara, Íslenska, Armenian, Nepali, Mongolian, Bosanski, Kazakh, Shqip, Kiswahili, Galego, Marathi, Punjabi, Sinhala, Khmer, chiShona, Yorùbá, Soomaali, Afrikaans, Occitan, Georgian, Belarusian, Tajik, Sindhi, Gujarati, Amharic, Yiddish, Lao, Uzbek, Føroyskt, Kreyòl Ayisyen, Pashto, Turkmen, Nynorsk, Malti, Sanskrit, Luxembourgish, Myanmar, Tibetan, Tagalog, Malagasy, Assamese, Tatar, Hawaiian, Lingala, Hausa, Bashkir, Javanese, Sundanese, Cantonese ■ Contact [email protected] https://whispernotes.app

Only worked well for a few days. After that, the transcription produced mostly gibberish in the form of place holder text for noises despite the fact that speech was clear in the recording. Even audio that had previously been transcribed well produced the same when re-transcribed.

Whisper Notes - Speech to Text is, without a doubt, the best dictation app I've used on iOS. First and foremost, the developer, Yeoni Lee, has a dedicated Discord channel where they are immediately responsive and supportive of every user who joins. This level of accessibility and engagement is rare and remarkable amongst other iOS developers. What sets this app apart from others is its pricing model. In an age where most apps with similar functionality require a subscription fee—even for locally processed dictation—Whisper Notes offers a refreshing throwback to the early days of the App Store with a one-time purchase. “No subscriptions, no in-app purchases, no ads—just a single payment for lifetime use,” and they mean it. I cannot praise the developer enough for this approach, and I've shared the app with many friends in the hope that they will purchase it and support this incredible work. I submitted four pieces of feedback to the developer through their Discord channel, and within just a few days, two of those features were implemented. One of these features was the ability to retranscribe speech if it failed or if custom words were added to the prompt. Another user wanted support for importing video files for transcription—a fantastic addition—which was also immediately implemented. The developer has also made other optimizations based on user input, which demonstrates their commitment to constantly improving the app. The app works entirely offline, relying on a local Whisper model for transcription. This means it's not only incredibly accurate but also very fast, with no need for an internet connection. It's perfect for long voice notes. I have personally used this app to record notes that are often over five minutes long, and some have been well over 12 minutes, without any issues. I have high confidence in its ability to transcribe accurately. It is far more accurate than the native transcription on iOS devices, even going as far as beating Azure Transcribe and Google's own always-online transcription services. It often correctly recognizes proper nouns, even obscure terms, because it uses a transformer model to understand the spoken context, not just a word-for-word transcription. It's not as fast as native transcription, but the accuracy more than makes up for it. It's perfect for long voice notes, can capture audio in the background, and integrates seamlessly with iOS shortcuts. For example, you can set it up to launch with the double-tap accessibility feature or the Action button and start recording immediately. It also supports batch exports, as well as the ability to delete multiple text and audio files all at once. Additionally, you can import audio files from your phone, making it a versatile tool for all recording and transcription needs. The simplicity, speed, and ease of use make this app a must-have. The developer's dedication to user feedback is unparalleled—they even discuss feature requests directly on Discord, rather than requiring users to fill out forms or send emails that often result in generic replies. This personal interaction makes a world of difference and further strengthens my support for this developer. Whisper Notes works seamlessly on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. While it doesn't offer automatic synchronization (to maintain its fully offline functionality), you can manually share files via iCloud if needed. This design choice ensures privacy and aligns perfectly with the app's purpose. I highly recommend Whisper Notes and encourage everyone to check out this app. The developer also has another app called "Do Not Type," which is similarly focused on transcription. "Do Not Type" adds LLM capabilities for grammatical checks and smoothing out transcriptions, but it has a monthly subscription for that AI capability, unlike Whisper Notes' one-time purchase. This difference highlights the developer's flexibility in offering different solutions for different needs. I look forward to seeing what they develop next.

For some reason Apple won’t let me update my review, but I’m the one who submitted the “Great on Phone, Doesn’t work on iPad” review. Since updating to 18.3 the app does indeed work.

Useful app. Speed of transcription is good, seldom more than a few seconds. Whisper output is superior to iOS built-in dictation. Someday, maybe Apple Intelligence will get to this level, but until it gets there, this app does an excellent job.
  • Select multiple text files to share?

Great app, very accurate transcriptions! However, I use it primarily as a note taker and so may quickly end up with multiple text files. Is there a way to select multiple texts and save them to files in one command? Otherwise I must “share” each individual text to a file one by one, which is rather tedious.
