I’ve got all the locations saved where I like to kite in my area… I like that I can see the forecast for any given day, and all the alerts I get to be able to schedule my KIte sessions…
  • Stick with the free account

The basic subscription is actually worse than the free version that I upgraded from. I had tide info in the free account and then it disappeared after upgrading. So, now I’m out $30 and have to use another app to get tidal info. On top of that the info you get in the tables does not match up with the graphics on the maps. What sense does that make, as one of them is incorrect. Disappointed with the upgrade.

Thanks for a new way to guess the weather. It’s always a surprise when you get there and you get what you get. Sailing is like golf. You can learn to do it in a short time. Then you spend the rest of the time trying to do it well. PredictWind is another tool in the belt. Mike

It’s a lot of money for publicly available data in a fancy interface. They also do not offer any refunds for services charged. If they automatically renew your subscription. It will count towards future purchases. Their proprietary models are inaccurate, in my experience. So at that point you are just using an interface for publicly available data from providers like GFS/ ECMWF. If you purchase equipment from them like a YB3i unit, you are locked into purchasing their services, both airtime and forecasts. You are not permitted to download your own tracking data. From PredictWind customer support: “ The YB3i unit you purchased from PredictWind is preprogrammed to collect position reports hourly and send them directly to PredictWind every 2 hours. This cannot be modified, and for the unit to do this function, you need to pay the $20/month.” If possible, I’d like to move away from PredictWind and move to Yellowbrick. Apparently this is not possible. “ If you want to see your tracking data, you must purchase weather forecasts. If you want to export your tracking data you must pay $49 in developer time.” Update 10-13-24: they did offer my tracking data for “free” as a one-time deal as a result of this review. According to the head service manager, (2 years later) you can transfer the YB3i. I have not tried that yet, but I will likely be attempting this in the near future.
  • Renting my tools is a nonstarter

I want to own my tools; especially critical ones that could either keep me alive or get me killed. SASS is an asinine paradigm. 😡

I sprung for the $249/quarter subscription because I had a difficult passage to make where weather information was critical. After the passage was completed, I forgot to cancel my subscription. Without any advance notice, PredictWind charged my credit card an additional $249. A more customer-focused (ethical) company would have given some advance notice, but no. Ok, my bad — I should have remembered to cancel the service. I then went to the site to discontinue the auto billing, and I found that the only way is to “downgrade” to the free service, which I did. Now I am helping a friend do another difficult passage and I find that I cannot use the professional features of the site, even though I paid for them. Evil. I swear, this company will never, ever get another penny from me.
