The Pimsleur method is great for those who have had basic knowledge of a language and want to improve their listening and speaking but for brand new beginners it’s very difficult to understand especially the grammar.

I feel that of the 3 apps I've tried, I learn the fastest with Pimsleur. Love that I can listen while driving or doing rhings around the house. Love the practice apps that accompany the 30 min lessons. Sometimes I break the 30 min sessions into 10 or 15 min sessions if I don't have time. Things are popping out of my mouth that surprise me (and those I'm speaking with) sometimes !!

Highly relevant contextual learning with enough repetition, you can listen in the car or anywhere you feel comfortable speaking out loud as you go

I find myself retaining a lot of words and able to distinguish sounds. Not sure If I need so many lessons teaching me how to ask ladies to my place / hotel for drinks and then ask how much. Or asking your guest to give you money. When I was in China these were not conversations I saw happening. Maybe how to get along in business or tourist situations, ask how to get to the train station would be more useful. At lesson 20 now and very little I can use as a tourist or in business. Still, their system for retaining words and phrases is pretty amazing. Each lesson is about 30 minutes of audio, 20 minutes of reading, and optional pronunciation practice. Just do your lessons someplace you can focus. Update, now in level 3 for Mandarin I am finally getting the kind of daily context I wanted. Those optional lessons (not the listening ones) could benefit from some reorganization. Wish there was a 100% offline mode. Even if you download a lesson you need to be online.
  • Keep going…it gets better and more complex…Quickly!

I’m not new to language learning and have earn excellent marks in all academic settings. However, despite the 7 years of study from middle school through college, I was not conversational. As one could imagine, I’ve made many attempts at reaching the true goal of being able to communicate in Spanish. However, my repeated attempts have left me fruitless. I also have tried Pimsluer before, but did not get far into the program for one reason and many others. This time, however, after our recent trip to Madrid and chatting with all of our multilingual drivers, I decided to push through my shallow attempts and persevere this time around. When asked how they reached fluency as they had, they gave the names of inferior apps that had gotten them to that level. The key was that they’d finished the programs. I discussed Pimsluer with them and they weren’t familiar, but vowed to have a look because of the quality I presented in comparison to the other apps. They also did give the key tip of actually using the language with every opportunity presented by their passengers. (I’m also taking this tip to heart!) Here’s to my success this time around…I can see conversational ahead, with Pimsluer being a key component. Try the app and you’ll see what I mean by Pimsluer being in a class all its own. Best of Success and Satisfaction to you in your language learning journey!

I have been using Duolingo for almost two years (710 day streak) and have learned how to do everything, except how to have a simple conversation in Spanish. That is pretty discouraging. I put an average of two hours a day on Duolingo. I started using Pimsleur almost three weeks ago and feel much more confident in starting a conversation. This is a much more natural way of learning to speak a new language. I wish I had chosen Pimsleur instead of Duolingo two years ago.

Absolutely love how it integrates you into a conversation, focusing on key points and introducing first.
